The Cold War began with two super powers, the US and the USSR, both fighting for their own idea on how to run a country. The US was fighting for capitalism and the USSR fighting for communism. Each Country felt that their way of running the government was the “right” way.
During World War I they began as allies. The USSR began to annex formerly independent countries in Europe. They annexed Latvia, Lithuania, and Estonia, and after the war they set up satellite governments in close by European countries. This made Western Europe and the US feel that their national interests and security were being threatened by the expansion of communism.
In World War I US and USSR did not support each other. When the US was at war against Japan, and asked for assistance from the USSR they kept telling them that they were on their way or would be coming soon. They never came making the US feel that they were not a true ally. When the USSR was at war on their own turf, and asked the US to come in and force a two front war on Germany we never came. Thus both countries began to have doubts on if they could really trust the other.
The US and USSR began to build up their nuclear bomb powers. The US had refused to share their information on the atomic bomb which aggravated the USSR. After that trade with the US and USSR came to a halt. The two countries did not want either country to profit from one another’s economy. They cut off all ties to each other and began to back other countries that had the same way of government, or idea.
Though neither country wanted to go into another hot war, actual fighting, we embarked on a cold war. A cold war is one specific time only against the US and USSR. Neither side actually firing nor hand to hand combat, but backing other countries to get back at the US or USSR. The US backed South Korea and the USSR backed North Korea. They fought behind those countries forcing their opponent into debts, and hardships at home with no real fighting between the US and the USSR.
